Cecil B. Patterson Award

The Arizona Black Bar (ABB) has created the Cecil B. Patterson Award to recognize attorneys and judges for advancing justice in Arizona! In 1980, Judge Patterson became the first African American judge appointed to the Maricopa County Superior Court. He remained in that role until 1991 when he served as chief counsel of the Human Services Division of the Arizona Attorney General’s Office. Then, in 1995, Judge Patterson was appointed to the state Court of Appeals by Governor Fife Symington. For many years Judge Patterson has served as a mentor to many others in the legal community. The award, which acknowledges distinguished judges and lawyers, will be presented during the 2023 Hayzel B. Daniels Scholarship Dinner on September 30, 2023 at Hangar One, 15220 N 78 th Way, Scottsdale, Arizona 85260.
