Bio:

Judge Carol Scott Berry, ret. is a teacher, trainer, retired Phoenix Municipal Court Judge and collaborator to further fairness, justice and inclusion. Prior to her judicial appointment, Judge Berry served as a Maricopa County Public Defender, Judge Pro-Tem in Phoenix and Chandler Municipal Courts and a sole practitioner practicing in the areas of real estate, trusts and estates and criminal law. Judge Berry earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California and a Juris Doctorate from Arizona State University Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law.

Judge Berry uses her privileges and blessings to work towards achieving justice, fairness, and equality for all. She is the Chair of the recently renamed Arizona Lawyers for Equal Justice (ALEJ). ALEJ collaborates with members and affinity groups of the State Bar of Arizona to conduct SBA Convention sessions that allow lawyers and judges to talk openly and seek solutions to issues of race, institutional and systematic bias and discrimination. Judge Berry serves as Teaching Leader in Bible Study Fellowship International (BSF) where she trains leaders and presents weekly Bible lectures for a class of 200 women. Judge Berry also serves as the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church (PRBC) Legal Advocacy Ministry. The ministry currently collaborates monthly with Arizona Black Bar members to provide free thirty-minute consultations to community members. Judge Berry has served on the Arizona Civil Rights Advisory Board whose goal is to foster the elimination of discrimination through community effort.

Judge Berry is a member of numerous civic and professional organizations including the Arizona Town Hall Research Committee, Arizona Black Bar (ABB), Arizona Community Foundation African American Giving Empowerment Circle (AAWEGC), National Association of Women Judges, American Judges Association, Arizona Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) and Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church (PRBC). She is a frequent speaker in Arizona Teen Court and other platforms encouraging and educating the public, grade school, college and law students about the legal profession.

Judge Berry is the recipient of numerous awards including the AWLA 2023 Ruth McGregor Award, 2021 SBA Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Award, ABB 2017 Cecil Patterson Community Service Award and the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice 2017 Medgar Edgars Award. In 2014, Judge Berry was one of six Arizona judges selected for entry in the Council on Legal Education Opportunity (CLEO) Hall of Fame

Judge Berry has been happily married. They are the proud parents of two children. She enjoys travelling, spending time with close friends, watching USC football and the Los Angeles Lakers.
